"This place is a local legend as it was once owned by a powerful newspaper family and a retreat for their political allies including 2 or 3 US presidents. Evidently the property has gone through several owners since then and is returning to its former status. We booked on Father's Day 2016 and thus it was already summer in the desert Temperatures soared to 120 F. As a consequence outdoor activities were limited to a rapid exit from air-conditioned car into air-conditioned lobby. a stroll about the premises at 3:00 am and swimming. Meals were excellent, crafted from local produce as much as possible and staff went the extra mile. Not everybody loves the desert, but if you do, spring is the best time just after the rains when the flowers pop out. The town of Borrego Springs consists of one main street and a circular roundabout adjacent to which there's a newly restored architectural landmark. The Borrego Art Institute and Kesling's Kitchen are housed in what used to be a market building designed by controversial mid century architect, William Kesling. At the other end of town in the foothills, is a popular 1950's desert resort gradually being rejuvenated by a daring couple. It retains the mystic of movie stars and celebrities from that era. On another visit I had gone hiking in the hills in search of a spring that turned out to be little more than a rapid drip. In 120 degree heat, this didn't seem like a good idea."
