“A lodging that may not be for everyone, but can warm your heart.”
Two nights from the day before the three-day weekend in November, on Friday and Saturday. Even so, it seemed to be fully booked from the first day, and there were regular guests too. My impression is that it is more of a mountain lodge than a ryokan, which I think is everything. If you expect a ryokan and stay here, you might complain, but if you think of it as a mountain lodge, it seems reasonable. The only question is whether you feel *** yen for one night is expensive. I think this is still on the more affordable side in Hakone, but I didn’t feel it was cheap for the service and accommodation I received. However, prices are constantly rising, and since I haven't stayed at other inns in Hakone, my thoughts might change if I were to compare. It is located about a five-minute walk up a side road from the bus street, and the atmosphere is very nice. The facilities are generally a bit old, but cleanliness is within an acceptable range. Occasionally, you might find dead bugs or share a room with a stink bug, so for those who are sensitive to that kind of thing, it might be tough. The handwashing and washbasin are shared, but I didn't run into anyone, so it was more comfortable than I expected. The tap water is said to be delicious water from Hakone, which is great because it’s drinkable without any chlorine smell. Since I was alone, the room felt a bit cramped, and once the futon was laid out, it was pretty much filled. However, the view from the next room was unexpectedly lovely, making the narrowness and simplicity of the room feel negligible. The walls were thin, as reported, and I could clearly hear the sound of someone zipping up a suitcase in the next room. Conversations are clearly audible, so it was definitely a good idea to bring earplugs. This aspect could greatly impact one's experience depending on luck. The meals are definitely not extravagant, but you can feel some effort in parts. For example, the main dish is a teppanyaki made with Japanese beef, but the tempura includes one wild vegetable, two kinds of vegetables, and one piece of kamaboko. The amount was just right for me, a woman who doesn't eat much, so men might find it insufficient. Overall, about half of the food seemed freshly made, while the other half was likely prepared in advance, but again, if you consider it a mountain lodge rather than a ryokan, that seems acceptable. Nonetheless, the taste was generally good, and I felt satisfied (although I was somewhat perplexed by the lack of flavor in the sukiyaki on the second night, which made me think they might have seasoned it incorrectly). For some reason, breakfast was mysteriously lavish (featuring miso soup with half a crab and simmered flatfish), which made me wonder if they intended to encourage guests who stayed with breakfast to book dinner for their next visit. And then, the hot spring. I believe this is likely the main reason for the regular patrons. It’s a somewhat hot, cloudy water from a flowing spring. You can stay warm for a long time, making small issues seem trivial. Several people commented that their rooms smelled musty, but I felt a fragrance of hinoki (cypress) in mine (which I believe is correct because my family home had hinoki pillars), so it might depend on the room. Additionally, all the staff were friendly and approachable; rather than a professional demeanor, their service had warmth. On Friday, dinner was only for foreign guests, and I couldn't catch the menu explanations, which was a bit disappointing; I would have appreciated a menu. They promptly poured tea whenever it ran out, and overall, I received pleasant hospitality. After trying other inns, I would like to think about whether I would still prefer this one, but it was a place that left me with warm feelings.
