“Old-school, classy, earnest hospitality in the true heart of Seoul”
I found this spot when I found out both my mother and my sister, her husband, and their two kiddos (under two and four) were coming in late November, right before American Thanksgiving. The family with little kids took a deluxe family room. My mom and I took a combo of a triple and then moved to a deluxe king room just to get the best price possible since it was all good to us. It's kind of mindblowing to transpose the price for a night in any room here onto what that price would get in the U.S. All three room types I just mentioned were huuuuge. They were all carpeted, but the carpet was devoid of stains and had that squeaky clean, dry, dustless feeling underfoot. The beds were supremely comfortable, and piled high with a down comforter and feather pillows. There were no really sharp angles or other hazards. The bathrooms had hard tile, but the tile was not slippery. This became our home away from home. The staff roamed the halls constantly cleaning whenever people requested. We took it easy with the cleanings, but they smiled and greeted us and cooed at the kids when we passed, so we kind of grew attached to them. Additionally, everything was all gussied up for Christmas so we grew attached to the hotel itself. One side of the hotel faces a less iconic part of the city, which is fine because in exchange for this, there are fewer high rises right in your face so you can see farther. All the deluxe family rooms, on the other hand, face Sejong-ro, the grand thruway where Gwanghwamun plaza with its statues of King Sejong (who invented the Korean alphabet to accelerate literacy for anyone who learns it) and medieval naval hero and iron-clad "turtle" ship engineer Admiral Yi Sun-sin mainlines into Gyeongbokgung (palace). The ancient city walls encircling old Seoul and immemorial mountains of Bugaksan, Bukhansan, and so forth preside behind it all, and you can see a good deal of that, plus the engineering feat and environmental restoration miracle of Cheonggyecheon stream. If you turn your head another way, you can see Seoul Tower on Namsan. All the iconic things within a short walk. Right outside the hotel is an alley with a major bank, two convenience stores, and several cafes as well as traditional foods. Practically everything worth seeing about the city - the aforementioned sites plus Gwangjang Market, Insadong traditional shops, Myeongdong, etc. are all walkable. The fancy brunch was definitely worth doing at least once. They have you order a meal but it's barely a meal and the real meal is a very intense Western buffet but with a few Asian food selection and endless packets of nato Japanese soybeans and cup ramen for the taking. I could go on and on about how luxe yet how unpretentious this place felt at the same time, but I'll end with one example of our final day there. The baby had developed a nasty cough overnight and all hell was breaking loose while everyone was trying to figure out departure. So, auntie was assigned to go out and try and find some cereal for them. But of course the convenience stores had mostly junk foods and sugary snacks/desserts, not American-type cereal even if those are also sugary crap. Realizing I was crossing a line (I've worked in food service before and it's freaking unbelievable what customers with kids ask for for their kids), I couldn't resist going to the buffet for help because I knew they had hella cereal. It was still slightly before opening time, so luckily I wasn't interrupting the hostess too much when I begged for some cereal and even offered to pay some informal amount (as if they'd accept that). The hostess said she had to ask her manager, and walked out. She returned almost immediately with said manager, who smiled knowingly at my simpering self and motioned for his colleague to go on and give me some cups of various cereals from their ultra buffet. That type of special understanding many times over in all situations during the week we enjoyed life at Ko
