Located at an altitude of 680 meters, there are no extremely hot days in the summer. It can get hot during the day, but the temperature drops at night, so please use an electric fan. Please be careful if you are used to air conditioning on a daily basis. The property provides kotatsu, fan heaters, and hot water bottles as heating equipment in the winter. Enjoy the natural breeze in the summer, soak in the hot springs in the morning and evening in the winter, and sometimes use hot water bottles, so you don't need a fan heater and just use the kotatsu, and enjoy the seasons as if you were reminiscing about the Showa era.

“Get what you pay for, i guess...”

For the price paid, i can't complain much. However, upon arriving there where extra charges for shower/onsen usage, towels and parking. We were also told we could upgrade our room to have a private bathroom but realised it was only a private toilet bowl and sink with no heating. Rooms were big and clean enough. Onsen is pretty decent but you do have to climb 1-2 floors to access daily. We were there for snowboarding so location wise it only made sense because we rented a car, which is also at least a 20-30min drive to the nearest ski resort (shiga kogen). I believe its near the monkey onsen town but i couldn't care less about that so i'm not sure. Overall, we went with Nozaru onsen for the affordable 10 day stay. However, this trip has taught me that sometimes paying a bit more for more comfortable accoms, especially if it isn't a short stay, is well worth it. Those looking to drive i would recommended basing yourself nearer to the city nagano, that way there are plenty of resorts within a 1hour drive radius to explore.

“Good value for the Onsen area”

Property offers good value though since it isn’t part of the Onsen organization at Shibu Onsen, you will have to pay extra to use the publicly maintained ones. Nozaru hostel offers a private onsen in the building that is gender segregated though the male experience is far superior compared to the female one. Room contains a kerosine/electric heater and kotatsu (heated blanket table) that you can use in the winter. Location is really convenient for people that want to enjoy the Onsen town and also easy access to jigokudani (snow monkeys). Keep in mind since it is considered the countryside, shopping options are extremely limited. You can rent towels and a yukata to walk around between the public onsens if you so choose. To use the public onsens, you will have to pay at the tourist centre

        “Great value hostel!”

I think the bad reviews on this place are just from people who haven't stayed in a hostel before. It was a great value for the money and we even had a toilet in our private room which was a plus. The onsen was really nice in the hostel. The women's is covered outside unfortunately so people don't look in and the men's was outdoors. Only cons: we were here in January and our heater was throwing errors at first so it was very cold in the rooms. The common area are also pretty cold. It was a little funky showering in the onsen only but it was usually empty so not a big deal

        “Hostel but Ryokan?!”

Its labeled as a hostel, but its the only affordable Ryokan in the valley! - I've wanted a tritonal Ryokan stay since I started my 3 months trip in Japan! Its a big 2.5km hike up from the closest station but if your visiting "Snow Monkey Park" this is a good place to stay. I thought I was getting a small room, but I was mistaken for the price of a capsule hotel I had a HUGE!! room with a private bathroom & balcony. I could of fit a family of 8 in this room but I had it all to myself. The staff is a little absent, because the town is quite quiet. That's not a bad thing! They have a place for ski gear & a private onsen that allows foreigners WITH tattoos. That's pretty rare, my only complaint was it was a little cold (I stayed here week 1 of January) They had a mini kitchen, but I will say it was kind of dirty, but I only used the fridge/microwave & it was fine. If you want to go to this area & not spend a ton of money this is a great place! The front desk lady even gave me a blanket because she saw I was so cold before check in, very sweet! My only advice to the hostel, would be, clarify the check-in process, put a heater in the common room & add some lights, or thing to encourage meeting people, & if you offered pickup from Yudanaka Station, I would of loved that!!!! The walk up with a large bag was terrible. & Maybe notify guests that their is not many places to get food that far up the mountain. - The Izakaya called "Motoya" is awesome! - The owner will tell you its only a bar, but they have a small selection of food!! Get their early & order Yakitori & the grilled cheese! He is a nice man & very friendly once you meet him .

        “Old, minimal and needs renovations”

This place is good, great location, great onsen, lots of space in the room, but you must manage your expectations as it feels like the place was left unmaintained since decades. But if you don't mind that aspect, then it's a good place which will provide what you need. We had a huge room with lots of space to sleep, a place to eat, lots of space for the luggage, a toilet and a sink. There was a small refrigerator. No air conditioned, but two standing fans if needed.
