Chandigarh State hotels & places to stay

I visited Chandigarh on 24th Nov,2016 to attend the MICROCON at PGIMER. I planned to stay at this property for 4 nights/5 days, and booked very early. The photographs of the place was something different and not like a conventional 'Hotel' as we see. And I was bang on. Even before entering my room, I became friends(if I may say) with Mr. Suraj Kapoor, who co-runs the place with his wife Mrs.Monica Kapoor. People like them are a rarity. Mr.Kapoor drove me to his place from Chandigarh Airport in his own car on 24th and during the drive he made it a point to show me places of interest in this green,vibrant, orchestrated,disciplined city of North. I would treasure the drive from airport to New Chandigarh Holiday Home, for long. This is not a conventional hotel. Situated at a very calm place in Sec 12 of Chandigarh amidst views of Shivalik mountains, Golf club etc. far from the hustle bustle of city life. That was rejuvenating. Mr. and Mrs. Kapoor are perfect hosts and echoes the age old Indian philosophy of service "Atithi Devo Bhaba"(Guests are form of God).During my stay there, I had to visit PGIMER regularly. Transport was always ready. Yadav ji was of great service with his auto-rickshaw and great road-sense. Found a friend in him. The Menu is simple and encompasses pan-Indian taste, however few more items can be added. Sonu's room service was great in a single word. Saw the Kapoor couple working so hard so that the guests can be at maximum comfy. The washroom was good with geyser, shower etc. The living room reflected good Indian taste.Was well lit,spacious and had ample plug points for my laptop,mobile charger, mosquito repellent etc and had LED TV with most channels, AC etc.. Privacy was maintained supremely. Not a knock without cause and beyond time. The rooftop was nice. I left the place on 28th Nov,late morning. This hotel is located in Sector 45 "burail market", which is quite a down market area of Chandigarh. In fact it is more like an Old Delhi neighbourhood, dirty and chaotic, and quite unlike clean, green and orderly Chandigarh. There are a heap of budget hotels in the area. Chandigarh is not a big city, more like a large town, so sector 45 is not that far from the downtown area. The hotel itself was fine, check in was easy, the WIFI was pretty good. The room was quite large, with high ceilings and a big bathroom with 24 hour hot water. This is a good option if you want to save some money during your stay in Chandigarh.

I specifically booked this hotel because the listing shows it as being in Sector 17, a prime location for much of the best sights in the city. After traveling over 10 hours by bus, I arrived at nearly midnight. The desk man told me I had no reservation. When I assured him I did and showed my confirmation, he said it was for their 'sister hotel' all the way back in the 42nd Sector. I showed him the Agoda listing, proof that the hotel was advertised and labeled as being in Sector 17 and at our current location. He didn't care nor offered an apology or sympathy. Instead he insisted it was not their fault and continued to defend. He offered me the "only" room he had, which was a filthy hole with the bathroom down the hall, for over 1,000 more rupees per night. When I scoffed at that he tried to get me into a rickshaw to drive me 15-20 minutes away to the other hotel. I asked for the manager, who came some time thereafter. He proceeded to tell me all rooms were booked and I couldn't stay there. Having been exhausted from traveling, I was doing my best, however, my patience and platitude were rather low. I informed him of the room I was just shown by the desk man and he insisted they were full and kept trying to push me out the door. At that point it was after 1am and I had no patience, tolerance, or tact left. I demanded the crap room at a discounted price, the manager sheepishly acquiesced, and I dropped my bags. The sheets were stained and covered in hairs. I had to demand clean sheets and pillow cases. Then the manager wanted my passport and said he'd return it in the morning so he could make copies. I remarked that it doesn't take all night to make a photo copy, refused, and took it from him. If nothing else, all they had to do was be nice. Sh*t happens, I get it. Extending a heartfelt apology and some sympathy go a very long way - even if there was absolutely nothing to be done. There is a deep void of these things here. For clarity, the place that

Had called a day in advance and spoke with Mr. Hitesh that will check-in at 8 am. He said it is fine and will be present. When came at 8:15am, no one at Reception and then a Manager came from sleep and said check-in is at 12 noon! No co-ordination. Mr. Hitesh not there and not reachable! Then Manager said charges for child above 5 years apply! I said agoda booking says upto 12 years is free. He said no. Then spoke with Mr. Chauhan and he said No charges. Parking is outside the premises. The booking said Air conditioning but Manager said not available now! There is no dressing room as mentioned in Agoda. The linen was not spotless as mentioned on website. The website says fully functional bathroom; the bathroom mirror were not cleaned, the basin was leaking and the washbasin is very difficult to access as it is very far from where you stand! Never seen such a position. So everything not as per mentioned on website. The other staff were fine. B/fast is limited serving.

Had an excellent stay at Mint Hotel Premia. It's a new hotel with tons of services you'd normally expect only in high end pricier hotels. Room had tea kettle with selection of green and lemon teas. Rooms are super spacious with nice seating area with sofa type chairs. Washroom was very very clean and had good amenities. Food was delicious and economical. Staff is very helpful and eager to assist you. Highly recommended for stay while visiting Chandigarh.

We did not stay. We booked online, based on the reviews which said it was new clean, good staff etc. When we got there, we were offered a room beside the desk, up an impossibly step stairway, noisy, smelly and not acceptable. The utterly bizarre basis of offering no refund of the booking whether for one day or in our case for the whole 4 days, is totally unacceptable by any standards. The management eventually turned (the alleged GM) up and attempted to offer another hotel further away in sector 35, which again wasn't acceptable. All in all we would and could not recommend this hotel in any way - appalling place.

The hotel's 'room info' with Agoda stated it has 'wi-fi connectivity' and I found it has never had internet or wi-fi. The website picture of the room seems to be 20 years old. This hotel's business card room picture is not of a room in this hotel. There was only cold water and a TV that did not work properly.The hotel and deluxe room are very overrated at Rs890. In hindsight I wouldn't pay half of that price. It is located in the outskirts of the city, and far from downtown. When I complained to the management/owner; he was very impolite and arrogant. He said if I wanted Wi-Fi and better conditions, I would have to go to his other hotel and pay 400 Rs. more!!

Overall Hotel Silver Bell is a fantastic budget hotel. Comfy large bed, tv, nice bath room, but the water was not really hot enough for a shower. The staff were very helpful and spoke a little English. The surrounding area (tyre market) isn't picturesque, but you only spend so much time on the balcony - which is big enough to enjoy your morning tea, if it's warm enough. We stayed 2 nights. I fully recommend this to anyone.

Pros- very clean hotel, staff is superb and very accomodating, excellent breakfast, housekeeping staff esp supervisor is very helpful. Front desk staff is very nice. Restaurant staff is very warm and welcoming. Cons- being on the 3rd floor we had a little trouble with the renovations going on the top for the bar opening next month. But it was bearable. The customer service stood out. We were there for 10 nights and hence we had a lot of luggage. The room that was provided to us at the start was pretty small, more intended to the business travellers. But we could barely walk normally as we had 3 big bags

Though we stayed here for only one night the Hotel was good and the staff were even better, warm and very helpful. Special mention for Pradeep & Saurabh. Just a note of caution that when I checked for closest hotel to the airport, this hotel came up within 3 kms. But actually it is not. So please rectify that so that some other customer is not misled. There should be more signages for the entrance to the hotel.
